Onitsuka Tiger Sneaker Shoes
Onitsuka Tiger is a brand currently owned by ASICS. Nevertheless, it continues to launch footwear with its own logotype. And no wonder. It’s enough to look at the Mexico 66 model, whose iconic status means it’s invariably popular. You will also find it – in multiple versions – in SneakerStudio. Onitsuka Tiger is one of the oldest Japanese sports footwear manufacturers and this feature is clearly reflected in the premium quality and unique style of the products.
Onitsuka Tiger - footwear with history
The iconic brand was founded in 1949 by an former military officer, Kihachiro Onitsuka. He was inspired by the idea to lift the spirits of the youth in the post-war reality through sport. The first product launched by the brand was a model of basketball shoes, which looked a lot like straw sandals. This concept did not catch on, though, so Kihachiro set out to improve his designs and in 1952 he launched more attractive and effective footwear. It became instantly popular all around Japan. Over 3 years the brand opened as many as 500 stores.
It also engaged in numerous collaborations with runners and other sports professionals, for whom it designed footwear which prevented corns and blisters. Such shoes - complete with an improved ventilation system and known as Magic Runner - were first launched in 1959. Apart from numerous sports collaborations, the Japanese brand also started to collaborate with an American company called Blue Ribbon Sports. Distributing Kihachiro Onitsuka’s footwear in the USA made it possible for Philip Knight and Bill Bowerman to gain ample funds to found BRS, which is nowadays widely known as ... Nike.
Onitsuka Tiger – versatile footwear
The major advantage of Onitsuka Tiger shoes is their versatility. The shoes by the Japanese brand can be won at the gym, at school and in the office. The thing is, they are incredibly comfortable. The flexible, durable upper fits your feet like a second skin, and the flat outsole guarantees perfect shock absorption. Comfort and resistance to intense wear mean that footwear by Onitsuka Tiger can be used at the gym or during your everyday jogging practice. Attractive design makes these shoes popular among those who appreciate unique and trendy outfits. The characteristic stripes on the sides add some grit to the overall design, and the universal silhouette will suit your casual style.
Onitsuka Tiger – a living legend
The flagship model by this brand is the Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66. This is the first model to feature cross-stripes (Mexico Lines). The name is not random, either – these shoes became popular during the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, when some participants (not only from Japan) chose to wear this footwear. This is also when the Corsair model was launched. It was an adaptation of American technologies to make them fit for the Japanese market. This revolutionised the Asian understanding of jogging.
But back to the unique Onitsuka Tiger models, “Kill Bill”, a famous movie by Quentin Tarantino, also played a part in making them popular. The star of this movie, Uma Thurman, used to wear the unforgettable yellow costume inspired by “Game of Death” with Bruce Lee. Black Mamba’s outfit was complete with gold and black shoes by Onitsuka Tiger - the Tai-Chi model. You can also find the legendary Mexico 66 in the same colour options – they are here for you in SneakerStudio.
