Puma – twin sister of adidas
Although right now it enjoys staggering popularity, not everybody knows how it all began. The brand started out as Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik, a company founded in 1924 by the Dassler brothers. Initially, the brothers produced army boots for Wehrmacht, and in 1936 they provided sports footwear for the national team of Germany and the USA heading for the Olympics in Berlin.
After World War II the company fell apart. Adolf Dassler continued his business as adidas, while Rudolf Dassler went on to found his own brand in 1948. He called it ... Ruda. A few months later the company changed its name to Puma. Immediately after it was founded, the company launched its first football boots - the model known as ATOM.
It was a matter of time before Puma was an ultimate success in the world of sport. In 1970 Pele was dubbed the player of the tournament at the FIFA World Cup in Mexico. While he helped Brazil win the championships, he was wearing Puma King shoes. Another marketing accomplishment of the brand at that time was the gold medal won by the Ugandan hurdler, John Akii-Bua, at the Olympics in Munich in 1972. Afterwards, Puma footwear became popular and widely known thanks to the collaborations with tennis players - such as Boris Becker (1985) or Serena Williams (1998).
At the moment, the German brand provides footwear and apparel to numerous sports clubs and representations. Puma products are used by players participating in Premier League, Bundesliga or Ligue 1. Only adidas and Nike can boast a larger portfolio of teams. Apart from their sports activity, Puma also focuses on designing streetwear. This line of business was endorsed by Rihanna, who became the world ambassador of the brand in 2015.
